As a kid I felt, as a few friends have also expressed, disturbed by how stores could shut down for the night, go out of business, or feel different when certain employees were or weren’t there. That the pleasant or distinct appealing characteristics of the place weren’t somehow a constant fixture of the place itself (e.g. the Mickey Mouse mascot has a terrible day and is extremely rude, your favorite restaurant which you are sentimentally attached to hires a new significantly less talented cook and the food is suddenly terrible etc.). It was a feeling that extended to seasons (a cozy beach being less cozy in the winter) or to friends’ houses (less friendly when they weren’t expecting company) or family vacations (to places that are completely different/deserted during non-vacation times with the ghosts of good times lurking around) and in adulthood became a complicated way to reflect on memories. - Michael Donovan.
